the setting

Kakunodate

Kakunodate was laid out in 1620 as a castle town, the samurai to the north and the merchants to the south, and the hotel stands in the samurai quarter, in Tamachi. Black board fences line the residences, their great gates marking the rank of the families within, and over them hang weeping cherries said to have come from Kyoto.

The samurai residences and their gardens are a few minutes on foot, the shops of the old town are close by, and the Hinokinai River runs beneath two kilometres of cherry trees along its bank.
