The rooms

There are two kinds of villa. The Forest Villas, of 65 square metres, sit in the woodland with a wide window onto the trees and a pillar of Koiwai chestnut at their centre; the Garden Villas, of 87 square metres, open onto a broad wooden veranda with a daybed at the heart of the room, two of them in the most secluded part of the grounds. Each has twin beds and is framed in red pine and cypress from the farm.

Dining

The table follows the farm: breakfast of its vegetables, fruit and fresh milk, and dinners that change with the produce of Tohoku, with seafood from the Sanriku coast and the mountain food of Iwate, served in the resort's restaurant.

the setting

Iwate

Koiwai Farm spreads over more than two thousand hectares on the lower slopes of Mount Iwate, west of Morioka. A hundred and thirty years ago this was barren land; it has grown since into pasture and broadleaf woodland, and the resort occupies a secluded corner of it, about eight hectares among the trees.

The pastures and forests of Koiwai Farm surround the villas beneath Mount Iwate, with guided walks through the woods, and Morioka is about twenty-five minutes by car.
