The suites are in the sukiya style of the tea house, on tatami. Most carry a balcony and a private open-air onsen, some an onsen indoors as well, and the family suites join several tatami rooms with a pair of beds.

The main onsen is walled in glass, so the forest stands around the water, and it is open at every hour. Most suites add an onsen of their own on the balcony, on the same spring.

Dinner is a kaiseki of Kaga, served in a private tatami room, on lacquer turned by hand by a family of Yamanaka wood turners now in its third generation.

Yamanaka is an onsen village in the hills of southern Ishikawa, known for its lacquer turned on the lathe, and the ryokan stands among old trees and tended gardens above the Kakusenkei Gorge, where the Daishoji River runs through the forest.
The gorge and the river lie below, and the onsen lanes of Yamanaka, with the studios of its wood turners and lacquer makers, are a short walk away.
