The rooms
There are sixteen rooms, every one with a private open-air onsen over the Forest Garden: Japanese rooms of tatami at 70 square metres, Western rooms of 60, junior suites, and executive suites of 95 to 100 square metres, in tatami, washi, bamboo and diatomaceous earth. Two suites stand apart: one of 120 square metres beside a cherry tree more than a century old, its sliding doors opening the full width of the room to the garden, and a terrace suite of 110 square metres with a study.

The onsen and the spa
Beyond the onsen in every room, the ryokan keeps two onsen of its own, each with an indoor and an open-air pool and a sauna: one made for stillness, its tub shaped with a round backrest, and one built in white hinoki cypress. The spa follows the old practice of Yakushiyama, the Healing Buddha's Mountain, with herbal compresses, Yamashiro spring water, rice bran oil and mint from Noto.
the table
Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki of Kaga, cooked to each guest in the manner of omakase from what the mountains, the lakes and the Sea of Japan give the region, served in a dining hall of twenty-five pillars with a terrace over the Forest Garden, with snow crab, abalone and Japanese wagyu among its courses through the year.
the setting
Kaga, Yamashiro Onsen
Yamashiro is one of the onsen towns of Kaga, in the hills of southern Ishikawa, and its spring has been bathed in for more than 1,300 years. The ryokan stands on the site of the old Yakuo-in temple, and its name, mukayu, means a state without purpose: rooms kept open and empty so that they fill with light, floors of local diatomaceous earth, and three libraries for reading.
The Forest Garden of red pine wraps around the ryokan, the lanes of Yamashiro Onsen are a short walk away, and the potters of Kutani ware and the lacquer turners of Yamanaka work in the towns nearby.
