The rooms
The pavilions come in three kinds. Mizunami, of 57 to 68 square metres, sleeps up to four; Yamaroji, of 44 to 67, sits among the trees on the ground floor or looks over the resort from above; and Niwaroji, of 48 to 81, is set apart along its own winding paths. Each is made as a place to live as well as to sleep.

The onsen and the spa
Hoshino Onsen, found in 1915, flows straight from its source, a soft water prized for leaving the skin smooth. Its onsen keeps indoor pools trimmed in cedar and outdoor pools among rocks, and the resort's meditation bath, for staying guests, passes from light into darkness. The spa offers oil treatments and acupressure on the meridians.

Dining
Dinner is a kaiseki of the mountains, built on the ingredients of the region, served in the dining room or in the pavilion, with a vegetarian kaiseki on a kombu broth. In the afternoon a lounge over terraced rice fields sits beside the sound of flowing water, and the bakery and the soba of Harunire Terrace are close by.

Karuizawa
Karuizawa is the highland resort town of Nagano, about eighty minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen. The resort lies in a forested valley with a river running through its grounds and its pavilions gathered along it like a village; from the upper pavilions the view runs over the whole resort to the bird sanctuary beyond.
A river runs through the grounds, a wild bird sanctuary lies beyond them, and the bakery, soba shop and terrace tables of Harunire Terrace are nearby.
