Ryokan, Kirishima

Wasurenosato Gajoen

Wasurenosato Gajoen is a ryokan of thatched-roof farmhouses beside the Amori River at Myoken Onsen in Kirishima, laid out like an old farming village, every room with its own onsen of pure spring water, and dinner of Satsuma cooking from its own farm.

the room

The rooms

The rooms are Japanese, in tatami and wood, and each has an onsen of pure spring water. Some add an attic and a living room around the onsen; one, on two floors, has its own dining room and a charcoal hearth; one has a terrace with an open-air onsen in a basin carved from rock; and the two largest, of twenty-five tatami mats, face the river with a semi-open onsen and a veranda.

The onsen

The main onsen is hewn from solid rocks of twenty tonnes and seems part of the land around it; outside its open hours it may be reserved for one party alone. A second, smaller onsen draws water rich in carbon dioxide, soft on the skin, and stays open until midnight. A spa stands beside the Amori River.

the table

Dining

Dinner and breakfast are served in the ryokan's first thatched house, its terrace over a stream: the cooking of Satsuma, with free-range chicken from the ryokan's farm, vegetables from its fields, wild sweetfish, Berkshire pork belly braised slowly, and greens gathered from the hills. At breakfast, fish and eggs are cooked to order in an open-air kitchen, and after dinner kappo-zake is served warm by the fire in the hearth hut.

the setting

Kirishima

Myoken Onsen is a valley of springs along the Amori River in Kirishima, lower and warmer than the mountain villages above it. The ryokan stands apart from the onsen town, beside the river, its thatched farmhouses, hearth hut and dining hall set along paths and a stream.

The Amori River flows past the ryokan's own farm and fields, and Kirishima Jingu and the highlands are a drive away.
