the room

The rooms

Three villas are for the night. The largest, near the top of the land, is two buildings, a bedroom and a living room, joined by a wooden deck over the view, with an open-air onsen on the edge. A second is turned to the west for the evening light, its gourd-shaped open-air onsen facing the Kirishima range and its deck over the rice terraces. The third is set in subtropical forest, bedroom, living room and onsen in one line, enclosed and quiet. Two further villas are kept for use by day.

The onsen

The onsen is in the villa: every villa has its own, open to the air, with the mountains, the paddies or the trees beyond it. The rice terraces and the Kirishima range fill the view from the largest of them.

the table

Dining

The cooking is of this hillside: the shoots and vegetables of the terraced fields, Satsuma jidori chicken served as tataki and grilled, river fish such as sweetfish and eel, wild boar, crab, beef of the Osumi peninsula, and bacon and sausage made in the kitchen.

the setting

Kirishima

The land is a hillside at Makizono, in the Kirishima country of northern Kagoshima: forest, terraced rice paddies and fields, with the Kirishima mountains in view. Each villa is placed for what it sees, from near the top of the land to the subtropical forest.

The terraced fields and forest of the estate surround the villas, the onsen valley of Myoken lies below, and Kirishima Jingu and the highlands of the national park are a drive away.
