Hoshinoya Okinawa is a resort of 100 rooms on the coast at Yomitan, on the west of Okinawa Island, every room on the ground floor and facing the sea, enclosed by a stone wall in the manner of the Gusuku castles of the Ryukyu kings, about an hour from Naha Airport.

The rooms
There are three kinds of room, all on the ground floor and all facing the sea, with Okinawan bingata stencil-dyed cloth in the bedrooms. The balcony suites of 88 to 94 square metres keep a covered terrace to the ocean; the deluxe suites of 93 to 94 square metres add an indoor patio with a long table and a kitchen; and the four villas of 256 to 258 square metres have two bedrooms, a heated pool of their own and a terrace that opens to the beach.

The pool and the spa
The pool is made of four connected areas of different depths, forty metres in all, warmed through the year and open at every hour, with day beds along its edge. The spa offers massage and a programme of Ryukyu wellness, and an ocean-view dojo is used for lessons in Ryukyu karate and the island arts.

Dining
The dining room serves Italian cooking built on Okinawan ingredients and the island's own culinary traditions. For a night in the suite, the kitchen will send the prepared ingredients to the patio to be finished at the table. The clifftop cafe over the inlet keeps a wood-fired grill for steak and seafood, and breakfast can come to the room, Japanese or Western, with the sea in view.

The resort lies on the coast at Gima in Yomitan, on the west of Okinawa Island, behind its wall of stone. Before it is Gima Beach, a natural shore of rock and coral reef; Nirai Beach, of white sand and shallow water, is ten minutes on foot; and a clifftop cafe stands over an inlet nearby.
The shore of Gima runs beside the resort, Nirai Beach is close by, and the potters' village of Yachimun no Sato is a short drive inland.
