Hoshinoya Taketomi Island
Hoshinoya Taketomi Island is a resort of 48 single-storey villas on Taketomi, a coral island of the Yaeyama Islands with some 350 people, built to the island's own rules: red Ryukyu tiles, limestone walls and yards of white coral sand. It is ten minutes by boat from Ishigaki.

The rooms
There are three kinds of villa. The largest are Western in style, for three, on plots of 260 to 300 square metres with a garden; the king villas have an open bathroom; and the twin villas add a Japanese room of tatami. Every villa has its room for the wind, its doors opening to the south.

The pool and the spa
The pool is 46 metres long, heated through the year and open day and night, among lawns and old banyan trees. The spa uses ingredients of the island, and the lounge is the place for sanshin, awamori and island stories in the evening.

Dining
The dining room serves French cooking from the island's terroir: Okinawan vegetables, island herbs, the Taketomi yam and the island's five grains. Breakfast is nine small Okinawan plates, a congee of soft island tofu, or a seafood breakfast, and a chilled hot pot of island herbs can be brought to the villa.

Taketomi
Taketomi is a small, flat coral island a short crossing from Ishigakijima, its one village of red-tiled houses, coral walls and sandy lanes protected as a whole. The resort is laid out as a village of its own on the island, with low stone walls, white coral-sand yards and an observation deck that looks across the island in every direction.
The village of Taketomi, with its water buffalo carts, is a short walk away, and Kondoi Beach and the star sand of Kaiji Beach lie on the west coast.
